Environmental welfare is a cause close to many of our hearts. At Medik8, we reduce our environmental footprint at every opportunity. We choose to do all this because it is better for the environment and can provide formulations which are better for the skin. We couldn’t do it any other way.
Our buildings are run from 100% renewable energy sources. Green chemistry is the science of making products using an energy efficient process; from the sourcing of ingredients to initial research and final manufacturing. We use cold processes during manufacturing wherever possible. This means many of our formulas can be blended at room temperature. Heating large amounts of product for blending requires a lot of energy, so we try to avoid this if we can during the blending process.
As a brand rooted in science and nature, we love and respect sea life. That’s why we are 100% microbead-free and have been for years. Instead of using plastic beads which are damaging to marine life, we only use natural exfoliators such as jojoba beads found in Pore Refining Scrub™ and bamboo micro-exfoliators as found in Brightening Powder Cleanse™.
In 2018 we removed all plastic inserts from our cartons and replaced them with 100% recycled card, making our cartons completely recyclable. This saves over 3 tonnes of plastic every year.
When it comes to paper-based materials, not only are we recyclable, we are made of mostly recycled materials. Medik8 use FSC certified card for all of our cartons, which means it has been sourced from well-managed forests or recycled sources. You will see the FSC symbol on all of our packaging as a mark of dedication to the cause. We try to minimise paper waste in our cartons to be as eco-friendly as possible.
We love using glass. All of our serum bottles are made from glass. All of our pipettes are made from glass. Since 2018, Medik8 glass bottles contain 40% recycled glass and we are looking to increase this number in the near future.
Since results always come first at Medik8, it’s unavoidable that some of our formulas require plastic packaging in order to remain stable and active. But wherever we can implement eco-friendly packaging, we will try. One of our primary focuses is to increase use of recycled materials.
Of course ethically, and as per the strict requirements of European regulation, we do not test on animals. We will not ask any other company to test on our behalf. We take the matter of checking our supplier compliance very seriously as an integral part of our product development process. We look forward to the day when animal testing is banned worldwide forever. Read more about our product testing policy here.
As experts in results-driven skincare, we know what to add in and what to keep out. There are so many ingredients used in skincare which aren’t necessary, we try to strip back our formulations where we can. We don’t regard ourselves as ‘chemical-free’, even vitamin C is considered a chemical, but we leave out any ingredients which could cause concern e.g. SLS, parabens, phthalates. See here for more details.
We only make products for ourselves. Even so, we are proud to tell you that we are certified ISO 22716 for Cosmetic Manufacturing, plus, ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management Systems which includes our commitment to excellent customer service.
This is completely voluntary, and is a great burden on our time but we think it's vital for any technology company to have regular external audits to keep quality and precision high.
At Medik8, we strive to create innovative formulations and treatments that impact the skincare industry. Likewise, we believe that it is undeniably important to support charitable organisations that have an incredible positive impact on those in need. Rather than choose just 1 charity each year, we have chosen charities within 4 categories which we want to support and we will continue to choose new charities as we grow.
As a company rooted in science, supporting this valuable research into new treatments is important for human kind. Our company has made a donation to Cancer Research UK every month for more than 10 years.
We support Noah's Ark Children's Hospice, a charity local to our office in North London. Without a children’s hospice in our region, this inspirational charity are building their own called The Ark to provide compassionate end of life care.
We've taken action to protect primary rainforest and coral reef, and we believe it is important to support organisations which help the world to do the same. We are in the process of choosing a small charity which shares our beliefs.
As we are part of an industry which for many years took animal welfare for granted, we are passionate about giving something back. We are currently choosing a suitable charity which we plan to support long-term.
